Münster cheese also spelled as muenster is a semisoft cow’s milk cheese that originated from a monastery in Alsace. It is well known for its pungent earthly aroma when ripe but it is considerably milder as a younger cheese.

It has a red coating on the rind that is slightly humid due to the washing process it undergoes, the coating not only protects the cheese it is also responsible for the strong, penetrating aroma.
